Byrsa

Byrsa (Route de la Goulette, Carthage) — derived from the Phoenician word for “citadel”, Byrsa was the site that once hosted bloody battles between the Phoenicians who ruled over much of the Mediterranean and the Romans who were bent on destroying them. Unguarded ruins cover the hilltop with few ropes or guardrails to keep you from walking where the Romans and Phoenicians once trod. Most of what you see comes from the Roman era, following the infamous destruction of Carthage as a result of Roman victory in the Third Punic War in 146 BC. One Phoenician quarter remains preserved on the hill, revealing part of the pre-Roman city. At its prime, Carthage was the center of an empire stretching from modern-day Libya to Andalusia in Spain.
