El Djem Amphitheater

El Djem Amphitheater (El Djem/Thysdrus) – located 2 hours (via car) south of Tunis, this beautiful Roman structure was built by proconsul Gordian in the 3rd century AD in the ancient city of Thysdrus – one of the main Roman cities in Berber Africa. It was constructed to hold 35,000 spectators, and mainly used for gladiator shows and small chariot races. Along with tourists marveling over this site, musical events are currently held here, such as the Festival International de Musique Symphonique d’El Djem.
