Matmara

Matmara – located about six hours (471 km) south of Tunis, this part of southern Tunisia has become known for Berber residents who live in traditional troglodyte structures (caves which are carved into mountainsides, or beneath overhanging rocks of a cliff).

George Lucas, the filmmaker behind the “Star Wars” films, chose this location to film “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”, and “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”. As a result, this site has become a magnet for tourists wanting to see remnants of a unique architectural phenomenon turned into a Hollywood film set.
